Guidelines for Protecting and Maintaining Our Metal Jewelry

Jewelry has become a must for decoration, but maybe few people know very well about how to protect and maintain it, especially that made of metals. As we noticed that, it would go dim and dark without gloss if it's neglected protecting and maintaining for some time. Then what can we do to keep it lustrous and glossy?

As for jewelry made of gold, silver or other varieties of metals, to maintain the jewelry just turns to the mission to maintain gold, silver and other metals. What's more, most jewelry contains copper which is added to enhance hardness, because gold and silver are relatively soft. But copper exposed in the air can cause rust more easily. So the initial and most urgent mission is to prevent the precious metals away from oxygen.

However, we cannot stop oxidation thoroughly, because the oxygen exists around us all the time. What we can achieve is just to slow the oxidation of our precious metals. Thus, it is advisable to keep our jewelry in an airtight plastic container and cover it with a specialized jewelry box.

To protect our jewelry, another factor should not be neglected, that is, sweat excreted from our own body. According to the statistics, sweat contains 99% of water and some other substances which are useless but harmful to our precious metals, for instance, lactic acid urea. Not only water but also these waste substances would damage the jewelry. To clear the harmful substances out of our precious jewelry, we can wash it with toothpaste and water, and then wipe it softly.

In our daily life, we should pay attention to do more concrete work to protect and maintain our precious metals.

1. Avoid wearing it during rough manual work. Keep it away from harsh chemicals and abrasive surfaces so as not to be damaged.

2. Store it appropriately in some dry and cool place for rust protection. We'd better maintain it in sealed plastic bags or things like that, and then cover it with a jewelry box.

3. As we mentioned above that our body sweat may cause damage to the precious metals in the daily life, we should do some cleaning regularly. Soap and water can be used to wash the metal jewelry, and then wipe it by a wiping cloth or a soft brush. As for the tarnished ones, a commercial polish, paste or tarnish-removing wipe should be favored.

4. Have a regularly professional checkup to ensure that prongs and bezels are intact. If it is needed, take it to have a professional repair.
